What is Barre?
Barre fitness technique is derived from the Lotte Berk Method, a program originally created in the 1950’s. Lotte Berk was a renowned European ballet dancer who suffered a severe spinal injury in a car accident. Working with an orthopedic surgeon, she designed a series of exercises to strengthen the spine and core to help in her own rehabilitation. Upon full recovery, Lotte Berk began sharing and teaching her exercise method to others.
Barre is a unique method of cross conditioning that fuses the best elements of ballet, Pilates, flexibility, and interval strength training. The method focuses on sculpting the body proportionally with the use of a ballet barre to aid in balancing one’s body weight over gravity, exercise balls, light dumbbells and exercise bands. It is a no-impact, high intensity workout that utilizes small, isometric movements. Targeting specific, muscle groups in each interval providing increased stamina and endurance.
Adopting the principles of interval training, Barre combines intense bursts of strength conditioning with powerful, deep lengthening recovery stretches. This specific sequence aids in developing lean muscle mass, while increasing flexibility and range of motion.
Barre is an efficient, one hour, full body workout that focuses on creating a strong, lean and toned physique. Cross training in this way, is key in allowing the body to train in aspects of strength, postural balance, flexibility, coordination and grace. The amazing focus you reclaim as you go through your workout, allows you to face the rest of your day calmly, confidently and health-fully.
"The hardest day of a new workout is the first day, because you don’t know what to expect. Everyone is intimidated on the first day - EVERYONE. All those people in that first class who looked like they knew what they were doing? They didn’t have a clue on their first day either. So take some pressure off yourself and be proud of yourself for trying something new….and come back tomorrow!"
